Exactly. The engineer moves methodically across the tiled surface, marking where the acoustic signal is strongest. We're often talking about a ten to fifteen centimetre accuracy on a wall that might be three metres wide.

So there's a bit of cross-referencing going on. Is acoustic equipment better suited to certain types of leaks or certain pressures?

Pressurised supply pipes produce the clearest acoustic signal because the water is being forced out under mains pressure, that generates a consistent, detectable vibration. Slower leaks from drain pipework or low-pressure shower feeds can be quieter, which is where correlating acoustic data with moisture readings becomes really useful. ADI uses digital correlators on supply pipes too, which compare the signal at two points and calculate the leak position mathematically from the time difference.

A correlator, can you just explain that one briefly for listeners who haven't come across it?
Dave
Sure. A correlator connects to the pipe at two accessible points, say, where the pipe enters the tiled area and where it exits. It records the acoustic signature at both ends simultaneously. Because sound travels at a known speed through a given pipe material, the software calculates exactly where along the pipe the leak noise originates. Acoustic correlation on pressurised water pipes is one of the most reliable methods we have for confirming a specific point before any tiles are lifted.

And I imagine homeowners want to know, does any of this actually damage the tiles?
Dave
No. Contact microphones rest against the tile surface, and correlator access points use existing connections wherever possible. The whole purpose of acoustic leak detection is to give the repair team a precise target so that tile removal is kept to an absolute minimum, one or two tiles rather than pulling out an entire bathroom wall.
